this review is gonna 2 different review of the same story told in different versions:
wicked: the life and times of the wicked withc of the west:
this novel is a very revolutioonized story that very few authors ever take a stabb at, seeing the story from the other side of the table. wicked deffinatly demonstrates that as we look at the life of Elphaba, better known as the infamous wicked witch of the west. Rather than being an evil witch she was more just misunderstood. set i the times prior to dorothy's visit, this story shows the late childoon and early adult hood of her life. she she begins to attend shiz university with her sister Nessarose, her sister who has no limbs also known as the witch of the east later in the story. she ends up sharing a room with Galinda the little miss sunshine of the community. even though they are very different they later share a very powerful bond in friendship. they then take ajourney to oz find that the wonderful wizard of oz, isnt so wonderful after all. elphaba daring to defy the evil workings of the wizard was betrayed by them and deemed a wicked witch.
the story is very compelling and dramatic to the point that can make you cry your eyes out. im not going to spoil it but this is one of the biggest trageties i have ever read ever. though i wont go into too much detail, there is a very intense plot in this story, involving love triangles, deception, self hatred and regret. one of the greatest liturature pieces of the modern world in my opinion. a deffinate must read.
wicked: a new musical:
very similar to the novel in some ways, and also different in many others. this musical is deffinatly how it sounds, a remake of a remake. this story follow elphaba in her quest to save the animals of oz from being persicuted and demoralized. to then later find the wizard is accually and evil trant who lies. but there are different twists in this story and the novel. fyiero a young winki prince who is described as a "brainless" young man becomes an icon for both galinda and elphaba ensnaring them in a big love plot. nessarose elphaba's sister instead of being without limbs in crippled and given a pair of silver slipers as a gift from her father. she later falls in love with a young munchikin who is described as sometimes being a "heartless" fool.
this is a great addition to the oz world. though the two are the same in many ways, it is very hard to compare the two together. i would deffinatly recomend them both.
